Diverse Groups and Advocates Find Common Ground During National School Choice Week
posted by: Alix | January 12, 2012, 08:07 PM

January 22-28 is National School Choice Week, a grassroots movement of professional associations, advocacy groups, parents, students and teachers calling for an effective education system that has the flexibility to allow parents to choose the learning environment that is best suited for their child. As we arrive closer to the exciting week, and our own AAE events throughout the country, a groundswell of support is brewing for the movement with diverse organizations and individuals coming together in an unprecedented way to support choice.

Organizers for National School Choice Week announced this week, that everyone from conservative pundit Dick Morris to Democratic strategist Joe Trippi and groups like Democrats for Education Reform and networks of public charter schools from across the country have circled around the positive message of school choice options for parents, students, and teachers.

In recognizing that we need to create a system that works for all stakeholders, we are seeing a revolutionary movement that encompasses a rich spectrum of diverse advocates and organizations seeking solutions. With the understanding that every individual and organization has something to bring to the dialogue, regardless of background or political influence, the potential for the choice movement couldn't be brighter this New Year.

Here at AAE, we are thrilled to be working together with this coalition to support National School Choice Week. We recognize that choice not only works for students–but teachers. In acknowledging every educational setting as a choice, AAE embraces all teachers working in diverse settings, including traditional public, public charter, virtual, or private. We are delighted to support the thousands of teachers that have benefitted from these new and exciting professional opportunities.

While there are varying opinions about specific school choice policies for students, this movement is much more than a specific law or issue, rather an uprising that promises unlimited potential for the profession. The future of education is choice and technological advancement, and as primary actors in our system, teachers are taking advantage of new professional choices like never before.
