Reform Matters: November 8, 2012
posted by: Ruthie | November 08, 2012, 08:25 PM

Welcome to the Association of American Educators' online biweekly publication, Reform Matters. This education reform-focused publication features both original AAE content and a compilation of the latest news from the growing education reform community.

As the largest national non-union professional association for educators, AAE is a non-partisan choice for teachers across the country. We are proud to be member-driven and only take positions on issues after our members are surveyed at a majority. The studies, articles, and policies showcased in this newsletter have not necessarily been endorsed by AAE; however, by sharing new and innovative trends in education policy, we hope to educate and empower our members by examining new possibilities in education.

Feel free to forward this email on to colleagues, or encourage them to join our email list. We hope that you will provide us with feedback and consider submitting an article or study for consideration.

National Education News: AAE Sounds Off

The votes are in! President Obama will serve a second term. Don't miss AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner's statement about the 2012 presidential election.

Also, AAE is growing by leaps and bounds in Wisconsin. Don't miss the MacIver Institute's recent article about the exploding non-union movement in the state.

"Teachers across the state are demanding options and voters have clearly rejected forced unionism," said AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner regarding the Act 10 reforms and the failed recall of Governor Scott Walker. "Since this law took effect, AAE has welcomed teachers from across the state seeking a professional and nonpartisan option."

Opportunity for Educators: The Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice

Great teaching inspires us. The Fishman Prize honors amazing teachers with $25,000 and the chance to share their knowledge with educators nationwide. Apply for the 2013 Prize today!

Launched in 2012, the Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice is an annual award for exceptionally effective teachers working in high-poverty public schools.

In addition to receiving $25,000 each, Fishman Prize winners participate in an intensive summer residency during which they reflect critically on their classroom practice, explore the larger issues that shape their profession, and write a short paper on the elements of effective teaching. The residency enables the winners to share their expertise with educators across the country without taking time away from the classrooms where they do their best work.

The application period for the 2013 Fishman Prize opens November 6, 2012. Early application deadline is December 3, 2012. Apply for the Fishman Prize or nominate a friend today.
