In a ruling last year that rocked the world of education, a California Superior Court decided in favor of nine public school students who challenged the state's quality-blind teacher tenure, dismissal and layoff laws. The Court found that by trapping students in classrooms with ineffective teachers, while pushing many effective teachers out of the classroom, the laws violated students' constitutional right to equal educational opportunity and in particular, disproportionately harmed low-income students and students of color.

Supreme Court May Determine Fate of Forced Unionism

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that it will take up the Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association case. This landmark case challenges the ability of unions to collect dues from employees who may not wish to be a part of the union or object to the use of their dues on issues which they fundamentally disagree with. AAE Members Testify in Support of Indiana Senate Bill 302

Senate Bill 302 was recently introduced in the Indiana State Legislature. According to the language, SB 302 "provides that a teacher who is not a member of the exclusive representative (union) may enter into an employment contract with a school corporation that contains terms that differ from the terms set forth in the collective bargaining agreement."
