Your Rights: What You Should Know
Print

Did you know... that the Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court decision officially outlawed forced unionism, agency fees, and coerced dues for all public employees?

You can no longer be forced to join or fund a union without your consent!

AAE Position on Involuntary Unionism
  • AAE believes membership should be active, informed, and voluntary.
  • AAE believes that teachers should never be forced to pay a union simply for the privilege of having a job in a public school. The practice of forcing dues from teachers’ paychecks is called compulsory unionism or forced unionism.
  • AAE believes that teachers, as college-educated professionals, should be able to decide whether union membership matches his or her budget and beliefs.
  • AAE believes that the professional educator responsibly accepts that every child has a right to an uninterrupted education free from strikes or any other work stoppage tactics.
  • AAE believes that strikes, sick outs and other disruptions to education denigrate the teaching profession.
  • AAE believes that resigning membership in a union or professional association should be reasonable and easy. Narrow opt out windows, complicated procedures, and unclear instructions are designed to prevent teachers from exercising their association rights.
