Association of American Educators Responds to the Passage of H.R. 4502
Mission Viejo, CA – Colin Sharkey, executive director of the Association of American Educators (AAE), a national, nonunion, professional association serving educators in all fifty states, released the following statement in response to the passage of H.R. 4502, the FY 2022 appropriations minibus, by the U.S. House of Representatives:
This week the House had the opportunity to demonstrate strong support for public charter school students, families, and educators in the FY 22 appropriations minibus bill. Unfortunately, H.R. 4502 not only fell short of this goal, it threatens the funding of charter schools that provide high-quality education for many of our nation’s children. In addition, we are disappointed that the Rules Committee did not allow the House to vote on an amendment that would have removed Section 314 from the bill. Section 314 threatens charter school students and families with the loss of federal funding if the school contracts with any for-profit company to operate, oversee, or manage the activities of the school. We urge Congress to treat public school students equally and not punish students at charter schools by cutting off taxpayer funds to charter schools. We respect the millions of parents and hundreds of thousands of educators who choose public charter schools to provide high-quality education to students.
