Teaching Young Students in the Digital Age
posted by: Alix | November 14, 2011, 10:48 PM

The internet and new technologies have revolutionized everything in our lives, from paying bills to shopping and everything in between. Education is now well on its way to being revolutionized by technology with teachers nationwide feeling the pressure to teach a new generation of students. As research suggests more than half of children ages 5-8 have used new devices such as iPads and smart phones, a new report offers recommendations for how policy makers and education leaders should take on helping young students learn and develop in the new digital age.

The report entitled, Take a Giant Step, from the Digital Age Teacher Preparation Council, finds that the integration of quality, research-based training models for early childhood educators is a key element currently missing in teacher preparation. In a world when 2-year-olds are iPad fluent, getting new educators on the same page as young tech-wizards can be quite difficult under the old models of teacher training.

In the report, the council identifies several goals for the nation to meet by 2020 to integrate technology and digital media into early learning programs. Included in the goals are:

  • Advance technology integration and infrastructure: The report recommends that the federal government expand technology integration and internet access to publicly supported preschool programs.
  • Modernize professional learning programs and models: The report urges states and localities to develop curricula and training resources for teachers and parents on the appropriate use of technologies with young children. It also recommends specific reforms to NCLB to integrate the use of technology in both preparation and ongoing training programs for early childhood educators.
  • Create a Digital Teacher Corps: The council recommends a new public-private partnership be designed to support a corps of teachers whose goal is to integrate digital learning, modern technologies, and best teaching practices to address the "fourth grade reading slump" that afflicts over one million young children annually.
While the goals are diverse in creating a system that works for students and teachers, incorporating technology into instruction is critical in meeting students where they are. According the to the 2011 AAE Member Survey, 92% of teachers utilize technology in their classroom at least some of the time, and the statistic will undoubtedly grow in the coming years. In order to modernize the system, starting with teacher preparation programs will certainly make an impact.

In the coming years, it will soon be imperative for new and seasoned teachers to receive training in the latest technologies, especially as children are entering the classroom more and more gadget savvy. While teacher preparation programs can be modernized to include the latest tech innovations, the question remains on how to engage tech-reluctant seasoned teachers into incorporating technology into their lessons.

What do you think about the goals of the report? How would you suggest training our current teachers on the latest technologies?
