The internet and new technologies have revolutionized everything in our lives, from paying bills to shopping and everything in between. Education is now well on its way to being revolutionized by technology with teachers nationwide feeling the pressure to teach a new generation of students. As research suggests more than half of children ages 5-8 have used new devices such as iPads and smart phones, a new report offers recommendations for how policy makers and education leaders should take on helping young students learn and develop in the new digital age. The report entitled, Take a Giant Step, from the Digital Age Teacher Preparation Council, finds that the integration of quality, research-based training models for early childhood educators is a key element currently missing in teacher preparation. In a world when 2-year-olds are iPad fluent, getting new educators on the same page as young tech-wizards can be quite difficult under the old models of teacher training. In the coming years, it will soon be imperative for new and seasoned teachers to receive training in the latest technologies, especially as children are entering the classroom more and more gadget savvy. While teacher preparation programs can be modernized to include the latest tech innovations, the question remains on how to engage tech-reluctant seasoned teachers into incorporating technology into their lessons.
