Wisconsin's Third Largest District Votes to Decertify from the Union

Teachers in Kenosha, Wisconsin are now able to choose an association that best meets their needs. Following sweeping changes that ended forced unionism in Wisconsin in 2011, the Kenosha Teachers Union was required to file for annual recertification by August 30th in order to bargain for local teachers. According to reports, the union did not meet this deadline, as the majority of members voted in favor of decertification.

In right-to-work states or in communities where union membership is entirely voluntary, teachers and education employees often join their local National Education Association (NEA) affiliate thinking they are advancing their profession and protecting their interests, without the union baggage. Drawn in by the promises of a "united voice" and "dues staying at the state level," busy teachers often get more than they bargained for when joining these self-proclaimed "professional associations."

Union Dues at Work: Data Reveals Concerning Extremes in Number of Union Employees

This week, the Education Intelligence Agency (EIA) posted a blog reporting the number of NEA employees in each of their state affiliate offices. It is no surprise that in compulsory union states, like Michigan and New Jersey, the number of union employees is far higher than in states where teachers have a choice. The varying extremes in the number of employees solicit further consideration and should serve as a wakeup call to union members bankrolling these organizations.

Following an eventful 2013 annual conference, the NEA's official membership numbers have hit the internet. According to the Education Intelligence Agency, the NEA has lost over 9% of its members nationwide. The 2011-12 school year absorbed the sharpest decline, with almost 104,000 fewer members in the ranks from the previous year. However, the losses continued by more than 41,000 members in the just-concluded 2012-13 school year.

Stranger Than Fiction: Maryland NEA Affiliate Hides Embezzlement

According to records obtained by the Salisbury Daily times, the Maryland National Education Association (MNEA) affiliate hid an embezzlement of nearly a half-million dollars from its members. Fearing a devastating membership loss, the MNEA conspired not to report special education teacher Denise Owens' use of union dues for gambling.
