First Lady Michelle Obama Honors Brown v. Board Anniversary

Last Friday, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to thousands of Kansas high school graduates to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision that outlawed school segregation. She commended their accomplishments and encouraged the students to continue the fight against school segregation.

"The truth is that Brown versus Board of Ed isn't just about our history, it's about our future," Obama said. "Because while the case was handed down 60 years ago, Brown is still being decided every single day — not just in our courts and schools, but in how we live our lives."

She continued to explain how the landmark
case represents more than an event that happened 60 years ago, but an ongoing struggle. She encouraged young people to speak up for diversity and push for it in their workplaces, schools, and other sphere of influence.

She charged attendees saying, "As you go forth, when you encounter folks who still hold the old prejudices because they've only been around folks like themselves, when you meet folks who think they know all the answers because they've never heard any other viewpoints, it's up to you to help them see things differently."

How are you addressing this important history in your classroom?
