Please Welcome "Best Practices Weekly" to the AAE Blog
posted by: Jill | September 07, 2011, 05:00 AM

This is an exciting week at AAE. Today, the professional development branch of the AAE blog has a new partner, Best Practices Weekly (BPW). BPW is a free non-profit professional development service for teachers that summarizes education research into bite-size chunks for busy educators.

On the first Wednesday of every month the AAE blog will be turned over to BPW to post an entry recounting their previous month's editions.

As Elliot Haspel, Editor-in-Chief of BPW explains "Best Practices Weekly staff culls through the major journals and magazines (think The Reading Teacher, etc.) and picks out the most actionable articles about instructional practices - currently we're focusing on elementary grades but have plans to expand into the secondary grades soon. Then, we put together a one-page summary, a short video and a short podcast, along with a planning guide to help you implement the ideas in your classroom. The whole goal is to let teachers consume a best practice nugget in 10 minutes per week and then put it to work with their students the next day."

We are partnering with BPW to ensure that this streamlined best practice resource gets into the hands of all teachers, especially AAE members. We encourage you to go to www.bestpracticesweekly.com and enter your email address to get weekly notifications of new editions.

With that said, let's get going.
  • Volume 1, Edition 29 - Conquering Subtraction with Regrouping. " Most teachers have experienced the frustration students feel when they run into the thorny topic of subtraction with regrouping, even in older grades. In an article for Teaching Children Mathematics , veteran mathematics teacher Luann Voza discusses several strategies drawn from current research about ways to help students overcome these challenges."
  • Volume 1, Edition 28 - Teaching Reading Comprehension through the Content Areas . "While integrating reading and content subjects such as science and social studies is often a goal, precise strategies for enhancing reading comprehension through content area instruction can remain elusive. In an article for the Journal of Educational Psychology, a group of researchers from Columbia Teacher's College discuss specific ways to do just that."
  • Volume 1, Edition 27 - Best Practices for Conceptual Math. "There are numerous strategies that have been proposed over the years for building students' conceptual understanding of math. In an article for Better: Evidence-Based Education , professors James Hiebert and Douglas Grouws synthesize current research on best practices for helping students gain a deep and lasting understanding of math."
  • Volume 1, Edition 26 - Acting Out Word Problems. "Any teacher has experienced the frustration of students who are able to solve the math in a word problem but struggle to comprehend what the question is asking. In a study from Scientific Studies of Reading , a set of professors from The University of Wisconsin - Madison and Arizona State University discuss a promising method to help students process word problems."
Elliot encourages feedback concerning Best Practices Weekly regarding ways that his team can continue improving the product. He can be reached via email.
