Federal School Lunch Standards Up for Debate |

Most recently, a U.S. House of Representatives panel proposed a measure that would allow some schools a year reprieve from the restrictions of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The bill would create an opt out process for schools experiencing significant losses from the regulations. Similarly, the School Nutrition Association (SNA) argued the meal standards have not only been difficult for districts to comply with but also costly and have resulted in wasted food. The SNA’s survey of members in the 2012 -2013 school year found that 47% of respondent said the revenues from school lunches declined. However, advocates for the new meal standards have argued their flexibility in addressing schools’ concerns and their ability to combat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. Michele Obama, one of the key leaders on the new meal standards said, “The last thing we can afford to do right now is play politics with our kids' health." She called the House’s opt-out effort "unacceptable to me, not just as first lady, but also as a mother.” Are the new school lunch standards being implemented in your school? If so, how have they been received? Comment below.
