State of the Response to School Shootings: After the school shootings in Wisconsin last week, many media outlets reported on how schools, districts, and other authorities have been reacting to them so far. Highlights included an update on the debate over armed teachers, reporting on new classroom equipment, and a story on what we know about preventing school shootings. ABC provided the bigger picture in its summation of school shooting events this year.
Florida Requires a Civics Test: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has unveiled a new high school graduation requirement: A civics test. The test will be similar the one immigrants take when they become U.S. citizens. It’s part of the governor’s plan to put more emphasis on civics education in the state. The test will be implemented in the 2020-21 school year.
Planned Parenthood Working with L.A. Schools: On Wednesday, Planned Parenthood, L.A. Public Schools, and the county’s health department announced a new partnership. Planned Parenthood will be opening clinics at 50 area high schools. The program will offer information on birth control options, treatment for STDs, and counseling. It will not provide information on abortions. In addition, it will train students to be “peer advocates” who can provide accurate information on sexual and reproductive health to other teens.
