New Study: Class Size Doesn’t Matter?

Class size has for years been an important subject for teachers. Many claim that with fewer students, teachers are able to provide individualized attention and student learning increases as a result. While a number of organizations have championed this argument for generations, a new study released by the National Bureau of Economics debunks the age old myths that polices like lower class size and per pupil spending are the determining factors in receiving a quality education. Education in State of the Union Address

Last week, President Obama spent significant time during the State of the Union address discussing his administration's vision for American education. "Teachers matter," said President Obama in beginning his education remarks. "Instead of bashing them, or defending the status quo let's offer schools a deal. Give them the resources to keep good teachers on the job, and reward the best ones. In return, grant schools flexibility: To teach with creativity and passion; to stop teaching to the test; and to replace teachers who just aren't helping kids learn."

Teacher's Choice presents portraits of four American educators who've selected non-standard paths. Teachers at a charter school, an online school and a parochial school are all featured, as well as a teacher at a traditional district school who declined membership in the local union. Member Mention: Educator Pursues Music Education Doctoral Degree with AAEF Scholarship

Mr. Matthew Cotton, a teacher at the Alliance Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science School in Los Angeles, has been awarded a scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation to supplement the cost of tuition for a doctoral program in music education at the University of Southern California.
