Member Mention: Florida Educator Attends Reading Conference with AAEF Scholarship

Turner Elementary School in Palm Bay, Florida, was awarded a $500 scholarship by the AAE Foundation to attend a conference this spring. The funds were used to attend the International Reading Association Annual Conference, which allowed Ms. Casabianca to network with other educators and learn about new technologies designed to help students “read their hearts out.” Continue Reading...

Ms. Margaret Quirante, a 1st grade teacher at Joshua Tree Elementary School in Joshua Tree, California has been awarded a classroom grant by the AAE Foundation to purchase an Apple iPad for her students. The new tablet computer is being used by Ms. Quirante's drama and dance performance club to create videos and interactive projects.

Mr. David Fassler, a teacher at Greater Lawrence Regional Vocational Technical High School in Andover, Massachusetts, has been awarded a classroom grant by the Association of American Educators Foundation to supplement the cost of servicing the school's science equipment. We are happy to report that the newly serviced microscopes are already being utilized by nearly 700 students!

Ms. Ashley Favorite, a teacher at the Lac du Flambeau Public School in Wisconsin, has been awarded a scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation to supplement the cost of tuition for graduate courses at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Ms. Favorite is pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Education with a focus on reading education; while both teaching fulltime and maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.

Mr. Matthew Cotton, a teacher at the Alliance Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science School in Los Angeles, has been awarded a scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation to supplement the cost of tuition for a doctoral program in music education at the University of Southern California. AAEF Chairman and AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner delivered the certificate personally during a school staff meeting.

Ms. Kimberly Harvey, a librarian at Echols Middle School in Northport, Alabama was awarded a scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation to help supplement the costs of attending classes for her Ed.S degree. The courses are part of a graduate program for an educational specialist degree that falls in between the master's degree and the doctorate in education.

Ms. Mojah Hamner, an art teacher at Fort Gibson High School, in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, was awarded an AAEF grant to purchase supplies to supplement a newly acquired kiln for her ceramics classes. This equipment, known as "furniture," will complete a previously donated kiln, allowing it to be in working order for the entire student body.

This summer, Ms. Andrea Thomas of Joplin, MO was awarded a hardship grant to purchase materials for her students lost in May's natural disaster. The funding will allow Ms. Thomas to replenish her classroom with supplies including notebooks, books, and other office supplies lost in the tornado. In addition, Ms. Thomas' professional membership in AAE was extended free of charge for one year.

Ms. Stephanie Proud, a teacher at Providence Hall Charter School in Herriman, Utah, was awarded an AAEF scholarship to outfit her classroom with new writing supplies. The funding will allow Ms. Proud to create a permanent writing center in the classroom, complete with a post office, a variety of writing utensils and materials, including individual whiteboards, student journals, and bookmaking supplies. AAE Director of Professional Development Jill Newell was on hand to deliver her certificate personally alongside her principal.

The funding offset the costs of registration and travel expenses for the conference.
