Have you ever tried lesson planning with a teacher who is teaching the same or similar classes with you? For some teachers it works, for others it is torture. Yet certainly it's worth a try in order to identify your best practices as a teacher, whether or not partner planning becomes an often-used instrument on your educator toolbelt. Continue Reading...
To be frank, I need the good stuff and I need it to be free, please. According to a recent survey by PBS, teachers’ reliance on technology and media to teach is increasing—rapidly. The increase is for good reasons: (1) there is quality content on the internet, (2) our students’ attention spans silently demand it, (3) it helps teachers differentiate instruction and (4) with school budgets shrinking, much of the online educational content is free.

With tax season just around the corner, it's important to know what kind of federal tax breaks you might be eligible for as an educator. Most teachers purchase supplies for their classroom out of their own pockets throughout the school year. What you need to know is that if you are a teacher you can deduct up to $250 for unreimbursed classroom expenses.

Hearts, red, pink candy, flowers (plastic and real), cards, blushing faces, a few tears , and Val-o-grams. Ah, it must be Valentine's Day at the middle school. I could never bring myself to "ban" the holiday in class. I love the sentiments of love too much. I even brought in treats for a year or two.

Disclaimer: I think that Will Richardson is legitI attended professional development training where Will Richardson spoke recently. I was swept off my feet by his technology talk. He is that cool guy in college that knows all of the obscure but quality bands and when they're playing in town. And he's cool about sharing the information with you. All the while you sit and think, "How does this guy find this stuff!?"

I really enjoy seeing the thoughts of students regarding teachers, especially when they make suggestions as to what they believe will improve teachers in the classroom. When I came across this student-written article, I couldn't resist! Students Julianne Capati and Spencer Taylor made a list of mistakes which they believe teachers and students should make.

I received an email over the break that started me thinking and also disappointed me. Basically, the email inquired about teacher training dealing with appropriate behavior and relationships between teachers and students. It was not the inquiry which was an issue for me. I want to help people find the professional resources they need. My issue was with the need for this inquiry to be made.

Yet another reason that being a teacher is fantastic— there are technically two "New Years" in a calendar year. The first is the beginning of the school year and the second is, of course, in January (Yes, my listing of them is chronologically incorrect, but in education the "beginning of the year" is the first day of school.)

Want to improve? Now is the time to do it; the New Year is almost here. Join the crowd and set a New Year’s resolution for your profession. Better yet, take a few minutes and share a mini- lesson with your students about the importance of goal-setting. Have them set a few goals for school or even just your class. Use the goals throughout the semester or the rest of the school year as motivation. Don’t forget to have them check-up on your progress too!
