It seems that the Common Core State Standards and its requirements are all that people are talking about nowadays. Educators in and out of the classroom worry about how its new requirements are going to affect teaching. Causing particular controversy is the new emphasis on nonfiction reading; teachers worry that nonfiction will replace literature in Language Arts classes as well as hands-on learning in subject areas.

After President Obama's State of the Union Address, many questions have been raised about the practicality of a federally funded pre-kindergarten plan. While some maintain that the initiative will give young children a leg-up and prepare them for success in school, others have questioned the cost and results of such a potentially large program.

With all the misinformation still being circulated and with the assessments for Common Core State Standards (CCSS) right around the corner, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that everyone is aware of the contents of the standards. I’ve done this previously with English/Language Arts, and so today I will attempt to do the same with the Mathematics standards.
