Today, the Association of American Educators joins with education partners across the country to celebrate National School Choice Week. School choice advocates throughout the country are gathering to show their support for providing education options to students, teachers, and communities. The school choice movement focuses on creating the most effective education system possible by empowering families to select the school that best meets the needs of their children.

Last spring, AAE was proud to award a classroom grant to Ms. Elizabeth Eaton, the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools Teacher of the Year. Ms. Eaton was recognized by AAE-Utah Membership Director Charity Smith at one of last year’s School Choice Week events in Salt Lake City.

According to new reports, the number of public charter schools in the U.S. has surpassed 6,000 for the first time in the 20-year effort to provide students and teachers with effective options. Figures are based on estimates from the 2012 – 2013 school year. These 6,000 charter schools currently provide education to more than 2.3 million students, another record number.

Along with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English-language arts and mathematics, new standards are being rolled out across the content areas as well. The new science standards, called the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), rolled out a draft and are now seeking input on the project.

In honor of the 2013 Presidential Inauguration, AAE staff attended the U.S. Department of Education Open House last week. The event was hosted by Department of Education staff and was conducted in an effort to engage the education community and showcase various goals for President Obama's second term.
